From using modified hay loaders to install seats in 737s to designing protective wheel covers inspired by motorcycles, Boeing has taken the Japanese concept of lean manufacturing to creative -- and highly profitable -- new levels. What's the source of its continuous success? "Boeing has an innovation culture, and the results underscore how innovative thinking can be adopted -- if employees are encouraged to be creative, disciplined and persistent," says industry consulting expert Sally Mounts.
