How to deliver tough news without terrifying everyone

In 2007, Nancy Duarte, a principal at Duarte Design, gave a hard-hitting presentation telling her team that tough times were coming. Her message was prescient but so surprising and terrifying that her employees were left shell-shocked, and it took months to rebuild effective working relationships. "Even though I was terrified about the future, I shouldn't have used fear as a tactic to persuade. It created more ill will than goodwill," Duarte writes.
