The latest official report on manufacturing's share of gross state product demonstrates that technological innovation, energy efficiency and computer-driven automation continue to drive manufacturing success among the best-performing states. The top five, based on manufacturing output relative to total gross state product: Oregon (computers and electronics), Indiana (chemicals and auto parts), Louisiana (petroleum, coal and chemicals), Wisconsin (machinery, metal fabrication and agriculture-based products) and Iowa (machinery, agriculture-based products and chemicals).
