Md. teacher's approach to history brings observers from Japan

History teacher Bruce Lesh encourages his students to think critically and independently by drawing answers from multiple sources rather than memorization, an approach that has brought notice from Japan's Ministry of Education. A four-person delegation recently visited Lesh's classroom at Franklin High School in Reisterstown, Md., after one official read the teacher's book, "Why Won't You Just Tell Us the Answer? Teaching Historical Thinking in Grades 7-12." A member of the delegation, which is visiting classrooms in the U.S., the United Kingdom and Germany, said the group wants to change the teaching of history in Japan from being teacher-centered to being more student-centered.
