Merritt: Preferred pharmacy networks drive down Rx spending

Medicare Part D and commercial health plans that include preferred pharmacy networks promote competition and lower health care costs, writes Mark Merritt, president and CEO of the Pharmaceutical Care Management Association. Studies have found negotiated prices for commonly used drugs are lower, and enrollees express high satisfaction with preferred pharmacy plans. "As policymakers continue to look for ways to bring down health care costs, specifically drug costs, they should encourage greater use of preferred pharmacy networks," Merritt writes.
