Proposed European transaction tax is illegal, lawyers warn

EU lawyers say a financial-transaction tax being pushed by 11 nations would infringe the rights of the remaining member states and could violate the region's competition rules. The European Commission says the plan could be revised to alleviate legal concerns, as it vows to move forward with the levy. Germany also is interested in "a swift introduction of the FTT," the Finance Ministry says.
