E-cigarettes, viewed by some as a safer alternative to tobacco products, are currently not regulated by the FDA. "There’s no question that e-cigarettes deliver fewer [toxic substances] than conventional cigarettes, but the question of how much less is still not clear," said Stanton Glantz, director of the Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education at the University of California at San Francisco. There are no scientific studies to demonstrate e-cigarettes' effectiveness compared with current nicotine cessation products, and they are not approved by the FDA for this function.
