Researchers: Hackers may be looking to profit from Tor malware installs

Fox-IT's security researchers say they have pinpointed the source of an evasive malware strain that has been infecting computers in the U.S. and Japan using components of Tor anonymity software -- possibly with the goal of selling the compromised machines on the black market. "The botnet appears to be massive in size as well as very widespread," researchers said. "Even prior to the switch to Tor, it consisted of tens of thousands of confirmed infections within a limited amount of networks."
