Study: Postoperative complications cost Medicare $620M yearly

Postoperative complications add about $620 million each year to Medicare costs, including by increasing readmissions, according to a study in Annals of Surgery. Researchers examined data involving 90,932 people in the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program. The greatest readmission rate -- 23% -- was found among patients who had a lower extremity amputated.
