Virtual dermatology has benefits and limitations

Virtual dermatology platforms such as DermatologistOnCall increase patient access to board-certified dermatologists and may aid early detection of dangerous lesions, but digital applications are not substitutes for in-person exams, experts say. Dermatologists use not only vision but also touch to assess skin condition, says dermatologist Sarvenaz Mobasser. Moreover, patients may have skin conditions such as purpura that they might not realize warrant discussion.
