Apples signal arrival of fall, versatile cooking

Apples are a very versatile fruit -- they can be diced or sliced, added to peanut butter or caramel, made into fritters, pies, streusel, turnovers and candy, or baked. "They taste good, and most everybody likes apples," said Betty Schoenberger, owner of Oshkosh-based Schoenberger's Pastry Shops in Wisconsin.
