Are whiteboards or chalkboards better for the environment?

In response to a question from a teacher about whether whiteboards or chalkboards are more environmentally friendly, writer Nina Shen Rastogi suggests that the boards themselves have about the same environmental impact, but chalk creates less waste than the pens used on whiteboards. What may be more important, she contends, is to work toward decreasing your classroom's environmental footprint and passing those lessons on to students.
