A growing number of Arizona students are enrolling in environmental science courses -- a trend that is taking place in schools nationwide. About 3,700 schools offer Advanced Placement courses on the subject, a jump from less than 2,000 six years ago. However, experts in Arizona say the quality of courses on ecology and environmental literacy vary among schools, which may integrate environmental topics into the curriculum or hold separate classes. Some teachers say the classes also help students change their habits by teaching them to recycle and conserve resources.
