Chemical industry has green challenges

Chemists often fail to consider new chemicals from a lifecycle perspective, including their potential environmental impacts, says David J. C. Constable, director of the ACS Green Chemistry Institute. The industry has "a long, long way to go" in overcoming the obstacles associated with sustainable production of chemicals, agrees Terrence J. Collins, green chemistry professor at Carnegie Mellon University. But industrial chemists are taking strides as businesses realize economic gains from more efficient, greener chemicals and materials.
