Cisco to acquire flash-memory-storage company

Cisco Systems will move into the enterprise storage industry with its $415 million purchase of Whiptail, which makes storage systems that use flash memory. Cisco leaders say the purchase will bolster its converged infrastructure strategy, and industry watchers say it will affect the company's relationships with EMC and NetApp. "Whiptail will strengthen Cisco's Unified Computing System strategy and enhance application performance by integrating scalable solid state memory into the UCS' fabric computing architecture," Cisco CEO John Chambers said.
