De Blasio finishes first in New York mayoral primary

Bill de Blasio, the come-from-behind progressive candidate, won a convincing victory in New York's Democratic mayoral primary, finishing about 14 points ahead of his nearest rival, William C. Thompson Jr. With a few votes still outstanding, it was not clear whether de Blasio had cleared the 40% level needed to avoid a runoff contest against Thompson. At a postelection party, de Blasio said voters had given a clear endorsement to his vision of an "unapologetically progressive alternative to the Bloomberg era."
