Teachers in Georgia must follow the curriculum, but they also have flexibility in how they teach the material, such as the attacks of Sept. 11. While some U.S. history teachers use a chronological approach and will not cover the attacks until later in the year, others are using today's 12-year anniversary as a teaching moment. "I used to ask the kids 'Where were you when?' but the kids now were like 3, so I tell them where I was to get their attention because I was flying that day," said Tracy Roden, a high-school history teacher.
