Growth-screening algorithms in EHRs boost detection of growth disorders

Following the integration of automated growth-monitoring algorithms into electronic health records, the rate of growth-disorder diagnoses jumped from 0.1 per 1,000 children to 0.9, Finnish researchers found. Among 33,029 children screened yearly using standard monitoring from 2005 to 2008, an average of four children per year were diagnosed with a growth disorder, compared with 28 diagnoses in 32,404 children screened from 2008 to 2009 using the automated method.
