IOM: U.S. cancer care system is in crisis

The U.S. faces a growing demand for cancer care, a shrinking oncology workforce and a treatment system so complex patients are often left to chart their own course, according to an Institute of Medicine report. Many clinicians have not adopted American Society of Clinical Oncology guidelines and few know enough about palliative care options, the IOM report found. Among the report's suggestions for improving care are the development of an information technology system that enables real-time analysis of data from cancer patients in a variety of care settings and development of a national strategy to increase access to affordable cancer care.
