PCMH pilot project shows success in R.I., study finds

Primary care practices in the Rhode Island Chronic Care Sustainability Initiative achieved National Committee for Quality Assurance patient-centered medical home recognition and reduced ambulatory emergency department visits by 11.6%, Harvard School of Public Health researchers reported in JAMA Internal Medicine. "On the basis of the available evidence, insurers, the states, and the federal government should act to revitalize the indispensable primary care foundation of our health system," commented Kevin Grumbach, M.D., of the University of Southern California, San Francisco.
