Report: Niche news apps beat out traditional news apps

The downloading of news applications for mobile devices has grown from 30% of all users in the first quarter of 2012 to half in the first quarter of this year, according to a Reynolds Journalism Institute and Digital Publishing Alliance survey. But even in the new media, newspapers are losing out to niche news sites, which command 69% of the downloads vs. 47% for newspaper apps. Generally, men prefer their news on smartphones and women favor tablets, the survey said.
