Study finds variable post-discharge ER visits following colon surgery

About 20% of older Americans were treated at an emergency department within one month of discharge following common surgeries to treat disorders of the colon, heart, hip, back or blood vessels, Medicare data show. For colon surgery, rates of ER visits ranged from 1 in 4 patients to 1 in 14, depending on the hospital, according to University of Michigan researchers.
