The trouble with studying Facebook

Some studies have suggested that Facebook use makes people unhappy, but others have found that social networking helps people cope with stress and pain, and provides a psychological and physiological high. That contradiction shows the difficulty in generalizing about social media users' habits, Maria Konnikova writes. "What makes it complicated is that Facebook is for lots of different things -- and different people use it for different subsets of those things," says psychologist Samuel Gosling.
