United Concordia campaign aims to close gap between oral, systemic health

United Concordia's UCWellness campaign aims to link oral health with overall wellness, possibly raising dental care spending but lowering overall health care spending. A United Concordia analysis of claims data showed a link between gum disease and chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and rheumatoid arthritis, and found that treating people with gum disease lowered overall medical costs. "If we're able to improve the benefits a company offers its employees, we know the dental services cost will go up, but this is offset by a decrease in medical services," said Dr. James Bramson, United Concordia's chief dental officer.
