School-based health clinics offer primary care for children

The federal government started distributing a total of $95 million in grants to 278 school-based health centers this summer under the health care law, and is expected to release another $105 million to further fund such clinics. One of the grant recipients is HEALS, an organization that runs four elementary school-based clinics in Huntsville, Ala., that offer vaccinations and treatment for common childhood diseases. "We are the medical home for our children," says Connie Carnes, HEALS' executive director.
