Fla. district plans to fix levee to get federal accreditation

The South Florida Water Management District is pursuing plans to repair the East Coast Protective Levee, which runs from Palm Beach County through Miami-Dade County, in order to obtain accreditation from the Army Corps of Engineers. The effort comes as the region's flood insurance maps are under review by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The repair work is expected to be finished in 18 months, said John Mitnik of the district's Engineering & Construction Bureau.
