NRC allows Ohio nuclear plant to return to normal oversight schedule

FirstEnergy's Davis-Besse nuclear plant will go back to a regular oversight and inspection schedule after five years of heightened monitoring that began when it relaunched operations in 2004, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission said. Inspectors detected an acid leak that almost corroded the reactor's steel cap, prompting the agency to order the Ohio facility's shutdown in 2002. FirstEnergy complied with the agency's requirements and boosted its performance, according to the NRC's letter, based on data from independent reviews and "special oversight inspection activities."
