High-speed rail is a long-term goal for Virginia

Virginia must first focus on maintaining and building its capacity to handle rail freight before investing in new passenger rail services like high-speed trains, argues Thelma Drake, the state director of rail and public transportation. "Yet Virginia remains committed to advancing high-speed rail," she writes, citing the state's application for $55 million in federal high-speed rail funding and its agreements with railroad companies "that will allow us to move quickly when funding becomes available."
