Railroads forecast stronger fall shipments

Class I railroad leaders expressed optimism last week that the industry will see volume gains come fall, the typical shipping peak for the year. However, "peak" may be an overstatement this year. According to Union Pacific CEO Jim Young, railroads may see "more of a bump" in volume gains than a "historical, traditional peak." Meanwhile, CSX is betting on a boost from strong intermodal traffic.
