Tesco has been testing its idea of franchise convenience stores in South Korea, opening 18 locations with costs and subsequent profits split between the retail giant and franchisees. The move is a strategy shift for Tesco. Philip Clarke, head of Tesco's international operations, is poised to become CEO next year. "We have got an obligation to the communities that we serve," Clarke said. "Some of those communities feel threatened because they feel that the arrival of modern, organised retail means that other small retailers close. This is a great way of helping them find another opportunity."
