More Americans lose employer coverage, turn to public insurance

A report by the U.S. Census Bureau revealed that 1.5 million fewer Americans received health coverage from employer-based plans, 1.8 million more joined government insurance plans and nearly 50 million Americans were uninsured in 2010. The rising costs of employer-based plans and high rates of unemployment contributed to the disparity, which drives more people to be more "dependent on safety-net coverage, specifically the Medicare program, as their lifeline," according to Ron Pollack of Families USA.
