Shell partners with Texas university on shale-drilling research

The University of Texas at Austin is getting a $7.5 million donation from Shell Oil to research improved techniques for tapping oil and natural gas from shale, coal-bed methane and other unconventional formations. "At the end of the day, everyone wants to know what the best answers are," said Scott Tinker, director of the university's Bureau of Economic Geology, which will handle the study project. Shell Oil President Marvin Odum said the partnership is a key milestone in the company's campaign to market more energy through innovation.
