Unexplained weight gain in dogs could be hypothyroidism

Large breed dogs that are overweight and sluggish with skin problems may have hypothyroidism, a disease of the thyroid gland that results in lower-than-normal thyroid hormone concentrations. Veterinarian Shawn Finch explains the diagnosis and treatment of canine hypothyroidism and also comments on a thyroid disease in cats, hyperthyroidism, which is the opposite of the canine condition.
