Principal Kecia Rogers wants a longer day at C.C. Spaulding Elementary School in Durham, N.C., so students can focus on literacy. Although Superintendent Eric Becoats calls the proposal "a brilliant plan," the school board must decide whether to approve it. "It's a great opportunity for our students to enhance or accelerate their literacy," said Rogers, whose school ranks near the bottom of Durham schools in reading, math and science proficiency.
