Not far outside Amsterdam lies the Oostvaardersplassen -- a stretch of untended wilderness that's designed to emulate the way Europe would have been before humans. Researchers have stocked the reserve with approximations of Pleistocene-era megafauna, including horse breeds and cattle bred to resemble aurochs, and wolves are being spotted for the first time since the 19th century.
