Study evaluates early warning scores for predicting ICU admission

A comparison of 10 pediatric early warning scores used by emergency departments to predict the need for ICU or hospital admission found scoring systems did better than triggering systems, researchers from the Netherlands reported in Pediatrics. Researchers said PEWS were better at predicting ICU admissions but cautioned they should not replace conventional triage in prioritizing patients.
