Use a mix of leadership styles to engage staffers

A study investigated whether bosses are more effective when they act as "drivers," who set tough goals, or "enhancers," who take a more supportive approach. "[M]ost leaders we've coached have told us that they believe the way to increase employee commitment was to be the 'nice guy or gal,'" Jack Zenger and Joseph Folkman write. However, they found the best bosses used a combination of both leadership styles.
