Commentary: Economic slowdown or impending recession?

To date, the impact of the housing slump and volatile credit markets has been moderate at businesses across the U.S., but some indicators are pointing to the potential for a recession, according to two writers. Points of concern are last week's news that businesses had reduced total employment by 4,000 jobs in August and were lowering payroll gains for previous months. There also was a drop in the number of working-age people who report holding a job and a slow-down in consumer spending, they write.
