Residents of New Orleans urge Army Corps to drop floodgate proposal

The Army Corps of Engineers should abandon its plan to construct a floodgate south of Belle Chasse because this would reduce property values and increase the risk of flooding in nearby areas, according to a group of New Orleans residents. Instead, the agency should build an eight-mile levee from Oakville to La Reussite that would protect more than 1,400 homes from 100-year flooding, the group's leader said.
