Motivational interviewing technique encourages sun sense

Dermatologists were satisfied with a motivational interview technique that encourages patients to use sunscreen, a small trial found. Though further study needs to be done on whether the technique actually changes patient behavior, "communication that incorporates the principles of motivational interviewing, a patient-centered approach that uses empathic communication, has been successful in improving a variety of health-related behaviors," lead author Kimberly Mallett writes. The study was published as a research letter in the journal Archives of Dermatology.
