Scientists develop Rhodococcus equi vaccine for foals

Dutch researchers have developed a vaccine for Rhodococcus equi, a bacteria that causes potentially fatal pneumonia in foals and can cause health problems in people with weak immune systems. To develop the vaccine, the researchers genetically altered the bacteria and found that, when given orally to foals 2 to 5 weeks old, the vaccine conferred immunity.
