Wellness program pays off for small company

A Georgia chicken processing firm grappling with rising insurance costs due to a trend in employee heart attacks, started a wellness program in 1992 for its 4,600 employees, many of whom did not get regular exercise and had predominantly Southern deep-fried diets. The wellness program included health screenings, gym memberships and other benefits, and since its inception, the company has seen its health insurance rates grow by only 2.5% annually.
