Bone-marrow-derived stem cells cut brain damage in mice

Adult mice with stroke-like brain damage had a reduction of 60% in the number of dead neurons and showed enhanced motor responses after they were injected with human mesenchymal stromal cells, U.S. scientists reported. The human cells lowered harmful inflammation and immune-system responses by turning on or off certain genes, according to the study. Researchers said the results could be used to develop treatments for stroke or cardiac arrest.
