Google: First phone is key to Android success

Google's hopes to tackle the wireless platform could depend largely on how well the first phone equipped with its Android operating system is received, according to the company's director of mobile platforms. "If we come out with a dud, people will go, 'Well, that was a waste of time,'" said Andy Rubin, referring to the first Google handset, which will make its debut through T-Mobile USA, reportedly as soon as Sept. 23.
