SEC's priority is to protect long-term investors, Schapiro says

The first priority of the Securities and Exchange Commission should be the protection of the long-term investor, SEC Chairwoman Mary Schapiro wrote in a recent letter to Sen. Ted Kaufman. The interests of long-term investors should take precedence over those who invest for the short term, she wrote, adding that trading technology must also be carefully reviewed to ensure that sophisticated traders do not obtain unfair advantages.
