U.S. retailers report a higher-than-expected sales gain

U.S. retailers posted their best sales improvement in five months in August, with clothing shops gaining 1.2% and general-merchandise stores up 0.4%. When cars, motor fuel and building materials are excluded, data show core retail spending increased 0.6%, double what economists had forecast. The growth contrasts with a decline in the sector during the spring and summer.
