Wal-Mart reverts to wider assortment to reclaim shoppers

Slimming down the merchandise mix was a mistake that alienated a segment of Wal-Mart's core middle- and lower-income shoppers, a strategy the chain has since reversed, said U.S. division CEO Bill Simon. Speaking at the Goldman Sachs 17th Annual Retailing Conference, Simon also predicted a challenging holiday season, as consumers continue to grapple with economic uncertainty.
