NYC teachers seeking broader say in school operations

United Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten yesterday proposed that work rules not subject to law, such as class length and teacher preparation time, be replaced in many schools with more streamlined agreements negotiated between principals and their staffs. Schools Chancellor Joel Klein welcomed the proposal and called for its application system-wide. Contract talks are scheduled to begin tomorrow.
