FDA layoff notices could be sent next week, commissioner says

About 2,000 FDA employees might get layoff notices as early as next week if Congress does not renew user fees for drugs and medical devices by the Sept. 21 deadline, according to a memo issued on Friday by FDA Commissioner Andrew von Eschenbach. Nevertheless, Eschenbach said he was confident that the legislation would be reinstated and assured employees that the agency was working with Congress to finalize the bill.
