Construction and demolition debris generates between 20% and 30% of landfill waste nationally, write architect Peter Steinbrueck and architectural historian Kathryn Rogers Merlino in the Seattle Times. Recycling older buildings will reduce energy consumption, pollution and waste, they note. "There is no reason why durable buildings of all types and ages cannot be adaptively reused, retrofitted, or at least deconstructed and recycled, rather than be demolished and hauled off to landfills," they write.
